A swarm of large, colourful bee sculptures will be landing in Chelmsford’s streets and parks this summer for Buzz in the City – Chelmsford’s new art trail, organised by Farleigh Hospice.

Schools, care homes and community groups can ‘bee’ part of the buzz with their own mini bee sculpture which they can design, decorate and name. It will be displayed in Chelmsford as part of the art trail for visitors to admire and then returned to them as a lasting keepsake of this exciting event.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a major art project and find out more about the important role of bees within our local environment. They can then follow the trail to see their mini bee and the giant bee sculptures while discovering exciting areas of Chelmsford they may not have seen before.

One of the first schools to sign up for a mini bee is Newlands Spring Primary and Nursery School in Chelmsford.

Head of School, Jenny Lindop, said, “It’s exciting that it’s an opportunity for all of our children to be involved – it doesn’t matter what age they are. We’re hoping they’ll be inspired to go and visit the bees within the city and be part of the trail that’s taking place in the summer.”

The children have planned a series of fundraising days that the whole school will take part in including a ‘wear your pyjamas to school’ day.

Farleigh Hospice is looking for businesses and artists to be part of the charity’s new fundraising event.

Next summer, Farleigh will be bringing the ‘Buzz in the City’ sculpture art trail to the streets and parks of Chelmsford. A swarm of 30 large, colourful bee sculptures will be installed outside places of interest around the city centre for 10 weeks.

Farleigh provides specialist hospice care and support, free of charge, to people affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex. After the trail closes, the bees will be sold at auction to raise money for the charity.

Buzz in the City is expected to attract thousands of local residents and visitors to Chelmsford to follow the trail and admire the brilliant bees. Each sculpture will be designed and decorated by an artist and can be sponsored by businesses, with their details clearly visible to all on its plinth and on the art trail’s map, mobile app, social media and website.

Pauline Harvey-Jones, Farleigh’s Commercial Director, said, “Farleigh Hospice is delighted to be working with Chelmsford For You – the City’s Business Improvement District – to create Buzz in the City with the support of Chelmsford City Council.

“We want to hear from businesses across Essex and beyond who would like to sponsor one of our brilliant bee sculptures and talented artists who would like to design and decorate them. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of this exciting high-profile event that presents your company’s details or your unique design to a huge audience of potential new customers, while showing your support for local hospice care.”

Businesses are encouraged to contact Farleigh now as there are a limited number of sponsorship opportunities. Interested artists should request an information pack and can submit their designs by 31 January 2025.

Schools, youth organisations, care homes and community groups can also take part in Buzz in the City with their own ‘mini bee’ sculpture to design, decorate and name. It will be part of the swarm displayed around Chelmsford and then returned to them to keep at the end of the trail. There will only be a limited number of mini bees made, so sign up early and no later than 28 February 2025.

To find out more about sponsoring or designing a sculpture and owning a mini bee, email arttrail@farleighhospice.org or go to www.buzzinthecity.co.uk.

Chelmsford will be buzzing next summer when a swarm of colourful bee sculptures lands in the city centre, raising money for local hospice care.

Around 30 of the brilliant bees will be installed outside places of interest in Chelmsford. Each one will be decorated with a unique design by a talented local artist, forming the ‘Buzz in the City’ art trail through the city’s streets and parks.

This will be the first time that Chelmsford has hosted an art trail. Organisers at Farleigh Hospice are working with Chelmsford For You – the city’s Business Improvement District – to create this exciting event with support from Chelmsford City Council.

Farleigh’s Commercial Director, Pauline Harvey-Jones, said, “Buzz in the City promises to be a great family-friendly activity that everyone can enjoy during the 2025 summer holidays. We are thrilled to reveal the design of the sculpture, which is a charming bee resting on a honeycomb. It has been created exclusively for this event.”

A prototype of the sculpture was recently shown for the first time to members of the care team and fundraisers at Farleigh Hospice and then photographed around the city. The actual bee sculptures that will feature in the art trail will stand at over 6 feet tall.

The eye-catching art trail will encourage more people to visit and explore Chelmsford. This will boost tourism and support the local economy, as well as increasing interest in art and design and knowledge of nature and the importance of bees to our world.

When Buzz in the City closes, the bee sculptures will be auctioned to raise money for Farleigh. The local charity provides specialist hospice care, free of charge, to people affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement in Chelmsford and across mid Essex.

Local businesses and other organisations can be part of Buzz in the City by sponsoring a bee. Their name and details will be displayed on the plinth at the base of the sculpture and included in a trail app which people can download and use to track their trail journey across the city.

There will also be a ‘learning and community programme’ for schools, youth organisations, care homes and community groups who will be able to design, decorate and name their own ‘mini bee’ sculpture.

To find out more about sponsoring a bee or the learning and community programme, email arttrail@farleighhospice.org.
